What invites calm in the midst of summer’s heat?

 For me, it’s remedies that promise cooling—but also quiet the heart.  Ayurvedic medicine, developed in India over centuries, answers the question with holistic prescriptions that are as effective as they are delightful. These include a dietary focus on sweet, bitter and astringent foods—especially melon, grapes, coconut, cucumber and mint—as well as moon bathing, wearing cool-colored clothing in white, blue and green, and avoiding conflict or overstimulation in general. May we all take inspiration and plan accordingly. 

And, for those inevitable overheated, out-of-balance moments, here are some favorite cooling tips.

 

{RELY ON ROSE}

Through an Ayurvedic lens, Rose is a cooling herb. It’s full of polyphenols and flavonoids that help inhibit inflammation, but its aroma is also so soothing for the spirit. Add fresh rose petals to a cooling bath or foot soak, and keep Bulgarian Rose Water close at hand.


{HERBAL INFUSIONS}

At the Spa we offer clients cool and refreshing infused water—combining fresh mint, cucumber and lemon or lime. These are so easy to make and enjoy all summer long.


{SUMMER'S SOLUTION}

Coconut, a key ingredient in soothing Plant Milk Serum, is the perfect summer solution. In Ayurvedic traditions, coconut oil is used for scalp massage to help dissipate heat, while electrolyte-rich coconut water boosts hydration and coconut milk can be used to create wonderfully cooling summer desserts—especially chia puddings.
