I love this time of year before we reset the clocks, when we can explore the full mystery of the changing light, and the growing darkness. Just taking a moment to recognize the shift helps me tune into the natural world all around us, and brings me into the moment. The solar shift is a most beautiful mindfulness tool! At breakfast each morning, it’s a little darker, and in the evenings, around dinner time, too. We can bring out the candles and enjoy a different relationship to the light.
So often we are encouraged to speed up, do more, add more, and the season’s diminishing light can be a tender reminder to slow down, take time, do less. Everything in nature has it’s time to expand, and to contract. We can lean into that more measured energy at these transitional times of year. For me, I find great support in bringing root vegetables of every kind into my meals, as well as guiding warming aromatic spices into my days.
