Joy To The World

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

I like to think about joy as a very welcome and unexpected guest. We can’t control it, or corral it, we don’t even know when it will arrive. But with loving attention we can create those welcoming conditions under which it might stay for a while.

So much of what I do when working with clients in the treatment room is about simplifying, creating a skincare protocol that uses fewer and simpler products, giving the skin more time to breathe, or re-working the diet or the schedule, lessening the stresses on the body and mind. But at the foundation, I know that these are also the ways in which joy more easily enters our lives. Joy comes to us when we’ve made space for that glowing happiness to grow, and, truly, that’s what beautiful radiance is all about. Joyfulness is what creates that beauty that shines from within.

At the end of the year, during this time of togetherness and of contemplation, we have a great chance to clear more space for joy. If your focus has drifted a bit, that might mean shifting those things that mean the most back into the center of your life. If you’re the kind of person who likes lists, you might note down those aspects that give you the most joy and consider how to provide them a bigger welcome. If you think visually, you might bring objects that remind you of your true joy closer into your daily sphere, where you can be inspired. And, of course, ultimately, it might mean taking out the calendar, and clearing space for relaxation, for adventure, or for more time with friends and family in order to let the joy in.

As we all know, whatever brings us joy, sparking that feeling of creativity and warm connection, is also the nourishing and replenishing source that makes us great in everything else we do. Joy comes from inside, and yet it’s also mysterious. So as we open ourselves to more of life’s sweetness, let’s also be open to surprises. Your next burst of joy may come from somewhere unimagined—Get ready!—but we can welcome it all the same, with the happy hope it will linger a long while.

I am wishing you so much simple joy this season.

Nourishment + Gratitude

Friday, November 3rd, 2017

There is such a natural and beautiful connection between nourishment and gratitude, and it’s one that shines especially brightly at this time of year. I like to think of Thanksgiving as a celebration of generosity, giving thanks to the earth that provides us with the perfect nourishment for our bodies, to the friends and family who feed our hearts with their loving kindness, and to all those who have gone before us, who have labored untiringly to create this nurturing world.

Every day, working in the apothecary or in my treatment room, I’m wonderstruck by the elegance and power of plant medicines. They meet our needs so precisely, bringing our skin into harmony and contributing so much abundance to our lives. That precision, meeting every need with its perfect remedy, and the sense of loving bounty I find in the plant world, are hugely inspiring.

But at this time of year, I also find happiness in appreciating generosity in all its many forms. I’m inspired by the ways in which we all support and nurture one another, through loving gestures great and small—and including the lovely ways in which we treat ourselves with special care.

After all, when we nourish all the beings around us, we come to realize our own most powerfully fulfilled—and glowingly beautiful—selves.

Thank you for your generosity and for your loving care.

A Little Tenderness

Thursday, May 4th, 2017

Blog_May2017_565x376web

Lately, on my days in the treatment room, I’ve been finding myself prescribing more tenderness to almost everyone I treat. It seems that so many of us these days need a little more care and a little more time and focus to address our sensitivities, on every level, with warm gentleness. And what could be more natural during the month when we celebrate Mother’s Day, than to reintroduce a loving, nurturing touch to our daily routines?

It’s often said that the skin serves as a mirror, showing so easily what’s going on inside. We blush when we’re embarrassed. The under-eyes are heavy when we’re tired. And when we’re stressed, the skin mirrors that reality. It’s incredible to think that when our bodies first formed in the womb, the brain, nervous system and skin all developed from the same cells, and that special connection reveals itself when our emotions play out through the skin. You know how the complexion just glows when someone is newly in love, or the way in which it dulls when times are rocky. Stressed skin heals more slowly and is more reactive, while, at the same time, cortisol undermines its strength, breaking down collagen and causing premature aging. And yet, beyond the way that emotions effect us, the skin might also be overwhelmed with personal care products, irritation through food allergies, or inflammation due to environmental factors. There’s a lot going on!

My wish is that we could all take the time to give the skin a break—a real chance to rest and breathe. Throughout the day I like to stay mindful of my breath, stopping to take a dozen deep replenishing breaths whenever I can, drawing fresh oxygen down into the lower belly and letting the exhale happen on its own. But it’s also important to give the skin time to simply be, washing off any makeup and whisking away environmental toxins as soon as you come home.

At the same time, if you feel you are processing a lot of emotion, or busyness, you might give your liver a boost. The liver breaks down toxins in the body, and when its overwhelmed, those materials pass through the skin instead. Raw vegetable juices are great support in the detoxification process, and it’s also so beneficial to include plenty of magnesium in your diet. This natural stress reducer is found in dark, leafy greens, seaweed, avocados, bananas, and oily fish (mackerel, sardines and tuna). My Purifying Cleansing Gel formulation includes magnesium-rich Alfalfa leaf, which so beautifully re-balances the complexion, while a simple Epsom salt bath also delivers magnesium through the skin.

Just like a mother might soothe her little one, I hope you’ll feel inspired this month to follow your intuition with a mother’s care, feeling into what your skin needs right now, and guided by the sweet touch of tenderness.

A Time of Alignment

Whenever I synchronize my intentions and energies with the forces of nature all around us—whether by getting in tune with each new season as it arrives, or making time to just be in the garden, or by keeping an eye on the stars—I notice what strength it brings my heart and what a boost it lends to my daily rhythm. So for me, this month is all about coming into alignment, underlining the natural connections that empower us, and those that lead us towards joy.

If you have an astrological bend, you may have noted reports that the end of 2016 also marked an end of a bigger cycle, introducing a time when every planet in our solar system is moving forward, a more harmonious alignment than at any other point in their collective orbit patterns. The star-watchers say that between January 7 and February 6th, we have a chance not only to shed what is no longer useful to us, and to inspire change at the most fundamental levels, but also to come together in a fresh way by tapping into the energetic momentum of this moment. It’s the kind of cosmic shift that has the potential to uplift and expand so many possibilities, for abundance and for brightening the collective consciousness. It’s a very sweet synchronicity.

Of course, nature’s own medicinal gifts offer the perfect bridge into these bright times. One great way to connect with the specific vibration of the day is through Helichrysum, which not only has miraculous effects on the skin, stimulating new cell growth and strengthening connective tissue, but which can move stagnant chi energy. Like no other remedy, Helichrysum calls in alignment. It’s an essence that can gently, lovingly nudge us and guide us forward, and its energetic frequency resonates with the heart and with that of the earth, bringing the two closer together. You can experience the Pure Living Energy of Helichrysum through my Intensive Repair Balm, or by introducing the essential oil into your daily routine.

It’s a wonderful new year—Let’s come into alignment as we come together.

I’m feeling so very fortunate to continue this journey with you.

Unveil Radiant Skin

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015

img-1As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of dry-brushing. So let me tell you a little about how this simple habit can help purify your skin, and burnish your summer glow. As you might guess, taking a few minutes each day to dry-brush your skin with a natural-bristled brush exfoliates dead surface cells, giving skin a smooth, fresh look. Exfoliating liberates sweat and oil glands, allowing the body to breathe, while improved circulation promotes the efficient absorption of oxygen and essential nutrients that support cell regeneration.

But dry-brushing also re-activates the lymphatic system, the body’s own detoxification mechanism. When our skin can’t easily rid itself of toxins, that can stress the rest of the body. By stimulating the lymphatic system—so vital to overall health—dry brushing encourages lymphatic fluid to flush away accumulated pollutants and impurities, ridding the body of bacteria, metabolic waste, toxins and all the things that can keep us feeling sluggish and tired, which also can give the complexion a dull or puffy look. (That explains, of course, why the Lymphatic Drainage Massage is so popular at our Spa.) The skin benefits from wonderful anti-aging effects, the immune system gets a boost, and the body’s tissues are rejuvenated.

I recommend two brisk minutes of dry-brushing every morning before showering. Start at the bottom of the feet and work with swift strokes upwards along the legs, always towards the heart, which encourages lymph flow in the right direction. In the same way, brush the arms back towards the heart. Dry-brushing can help reduce the appearance of cellulite and fat deposits, though it’s important to treat these areas with a light touch, as the underlying tissues there are already damaged. Brush the back. The abdomen can be brushed in a clockwise direction. Then, more delicately, brush the chest and neck. Afterwards, a quick, tingly shower washes away toxins, followed with an application of Bulgarian Lavender Body Oil on still-damp skin ensures a total replenishment.

The feeling of the dry-brush may take a little getting used to, but once you experience the results, I think you’ll see just how valuable cultivating this simple habit can be.
