The Power of Ingredients

Monday, April 9th, 2012

“What goes in” has always been my curious (and passionate!) approach to life…..what goes in to that amazing salad dressing I love, what goes in to the sunscreen I put on my children, what goes in to the beef & chicken that ends up on our plates, what goes in to our minds and hearts as we go about our day….simply put, what are the “ingredients” that go into our life – from food and thoughts to cosmetics and daily pollutants – we absorb it all holistically – on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.  This is a vast topic and I could go on and on and on….but, I want to stick to specifics today and link this “what goes in” philosophy back to my world of creating healing & transformational formulations for the skin.  I am an ingredient purist and I know that this is the foundation of what makes my formulations so powerful, medicinal and healing.  A final product can only be as good as the ingredients that go in to it, so I am going to shine a spotlight every month on some of our hero ingredients – why I use them and why your skin drinks them in (and responds with illumination!).

The Amazing Power of Silica

Silica (a compound found in the Earth, most prominent in quartz and sand), is known to be the reviver of youth and beauty because of its ability to promote the natural synthesis of collagen; it smoothes, softens and clears the complexion and is the master mineral for hair, skin, nails and bones.

The plant “horsetail” is one of the most abundant sources of silica in the plant kingdom.  The recorded history of Horsetail goes back to the Devonian period, almost 350 million years ago. To have a healthy, well functioning, self-healing, self-repairing body with flexibility, strength, resilience and elasticity you must maintain approx. 7 grams of Silica in your body.

The first ingredient in my newest formulation, Spontaneous Recovery Crème, is the certified organic herbal infusion of Horsetail – it is the high silica content of this miracle herb that brings recovery, healing and radiance to the skin within a single application.  Read more about my newest creme here.

Some of my favorite authors and healers have written in depth about this incredible ingredient:

David Wolfe writes in Eating For Beauty“The mineral silicon possesses many hidden properties, one of which is its ability to be transformed into calcium. Silicon is a conscious mineral; it seems to posses a form of intelligence. Both of the minerals silicon and sulfur work together with vitamin C to create glowing skin.”

Gabriel Cousens writes in Spiritual Nutrition:  “Silica is the beauty element. It gives sheen, resilience, and smoothness to the skin, hair and naisl.  It is also essential for all neuron transmission in the form of electrical impulses through the neurons, acting as a link between the nervous system and blood system. People with adequate silicon have a certain kind of beauty of movement, a sense of charm and charismatic personality. Silicon is also a protector of the skin as well as an insulating agent. Silica is one of the most important minerals for connective tissue, hair, ligaments, lungs, lymph nodes, muscles, nail, skin, teeth and tendons. Silicon is connected with consciousness. The more silica we have, the more we have the energetics and radiant flow of the liquid human crystal that we are.  Because silica/silicon is a binding element, it helps with the flow of electricity, heat and energy movement throughout the body.  Silicon is needed for the plumpness of the skin and functioning strength of all connective tissue in the body. The highest concentration of silica is in the nails and hair.”

Get more Silica in your body by including these foods in your diet:  Barley, bamboo shoots, kelp, oats, brown rice, brown rice syrup, alfalfa, horsetail tea, cucumbers, bell peppers, hemp leaves, nettles, spinach, radish, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, nuts, seeds (sunflower, sesame, flax), cereals and grains.

Get the all-natural facial that’s Gwyneth-Paltrow approved

Thank you Canada’s GLOBE AND MAIL and 889 Yonge Holistic Wellness Center!  We love being a part of your life-enhancing offerings bringing health, welness and beauty….

Rich and creamy meets wholesome and dreamy. Ryan Gosling on a spoon? Almost. There’s good news for natural skin-care junkies in Toronto. You no longer have to hit West Palm Beach or be on Gwyneth Paltrow’s holiday gift list to hook up with a Tammy Fender facial (the fair blonde’s a big fan). Like all high-quality small-batch things, 889 Wellness’s skin-care treatments are in hot demand. Unlike other status facials that rely on resurfacing your face, Fender’s orchestration of chemistry, botany and aromatherapy yields an all-natural, handmade holistic facial that feeds skin on a deeper level. Last week, I poached myself a pleasurable pink with my overzealous St. Bart’s surfing hubris and needed to calm my cheeks.

My journey to moisturized bliss begins with a genuinely warm welcome at reception. Holistic skin therapist Pauline Bakowski cleanses the skin of excess oils and environmental pollutants, and uses kaolin clay to exfoliate and decongest pores. A toner of roman chamomile acts as a vasoconstrictor to shrink my little red capillaries. Her tapotement technique – rhythmic percussion of the fingertips – wakes up the nervous system, releases lymphatic build-up and ensures I absorb the majority of product by tapping the tonic in. With 25 minutes of this facial devoted to scalp, shoulder and décolleté massage, by the time she applies the finishing, much-buzzed balm, I’m riding on a high of feel-good endorphins.

The benefits

Fender’s intensive repair balm, which won its first fervent raves from her post-op Florida clients, features prized helichrysum to tighten connective tissue and encourage cell turnover.

The spa

As the city’s pre-eminent holistic lifestyle concept offering yoga, nutritional counselling, doula care and childbirth prep, 889 Wellness inspires a near evangelical following. The spa’s menu works synergistically with these offerings – a smartly conceived beacon to urban dwellers looking to unplug from the static of city life. Founders Christine and Emily Russell share a vision for the bigger picture of wellness. Sure, the spa leaves you smelling deliciously edible, but the experience also reflects wider cultural and social trends. This is the kind of place where expectant moms check in for the Pea in the Pod massage while upstairs in a yoga studio that looks like a posh hotel, sophomores stretch and purr in spinal twists next to grandmothers in stoic shoulder stands. It’s no surprise that when the discerning team behind Thompson Hotel Toronto searched for a green spa and yoga partner, 889 Wellness was top of the list. This plum pick placed the Russell sisters at the forefront of Toronto’s wellness entrepreneurs, attracting such clients as Alexandra Weston, Belinda Stronach, Woody Harrelson and Rachel Weisz. While yoga at 889’s second location at Thompson has been thriving since last spring’s launch, the eagerly awaited sister spa will open on April 1.

A Mantra Worth Repeating: “Dolce far Niente”

Practice Being

As a mother of three, I have been know to keep odd hours.  Laundry at midnight – check.  E-mails at 3am – check.  Having an “ah-ha” moment with the rising of the sun – check!  I turned on the television around 6am this morning to create some soothing background noise for my almost-asleep-but-not quite baby Savanna to stumble across one of my favorites (the book & movie) “Eat, Pray, Love.”  It was at the exact moment when a group of Italians are sitting in the barber shop with “the American” explaining her feeling of guilt since all she has done for three weesks in Italy is  “learn a few italian words and eat.”  It is at this moment when her mostly Italian friends enlighten her (and all of us!) to the magical concept of “dolce far niente” –  the sweetness of doing nothing.  Although I had seen this movie before, at that moment, this concept came to life and settled right inside of me.  I thought, of course; yes, yes yes – it is really all very simple.  It served as a beautiful reminder to me that the essence and magic of life happens not when we are searching, doing, and acheiving, but when we are receiving.  It happens in stillness, not chaos.  Rather than measuring the success of your day by how much you’ve planned, produced and consumed, start counting your successes by the number of times you laughed with a loved one, how long you lingered over great conversation and a cup of coffee or the time spent enjoying your yoga class.   When we pause and allow life to unfold around and within us, the sweetness of it all is ever-present.  Embrace this daily and watch your life truly transform.  Be present with everything and resist the urge to do something about it – daydream, take the day off, disconnect.  This is the true elixir of life, happiness, beauty & health.  How will you practice your dolce far niente?  I know I’ll enjoy practicing mine.

New Baby, New Products, New Year!

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

My life has been overflowing with all things amazing and  joyful and I wanted to start 2012 by sharing them with you!  My latest and most precious life-change has been the arrival of my daughter, Savanna Dawn, born this summer on June 29th.  Much of 2011 was spent enjoying my pregnancy and nurturing Savanna as she grows and changes with every day.  She illuminates my world and has brought joy to my family in ways that are truly indescribable.  During this time I have been creatively inspired and continue to work on all aspects of the company, specifically developing new products (my favorite part!), such as my newest formulation that just launched this winter – Spontaneous Recovery Crème.  I can’t say enough about this crème-serum-oil in one and its incredible ability to transform the skin after a single application.  I developed this product for my clients whose skin needs moisture, hydration & protection on the deepest cellular level – it is my most intensive crème to-date and has been dubbed the “Aspen Crème” by my clients for its abilities in extreme climates (such as the extra TLC skin needs après ski!).  During its testing phase I brought this product with me on my travels to and it replenished my skin immediately and was my secret weapon against cold weather and 15 hour flights – I used it religiously on my own skin as well as everyone in my family.  I am so excited to now be sharing it with you!  I look forward to sharing and discovering together all the wonderful things 2012 has in store for us all….

One of my favorite parts of spreading my message of holistic living is being able to connect with people.  I recently had the wonderful opportunity to do just that with the official launch of the Tammy Fender collection within the coveted walls of two incredible bluemercury locations!  I am so excited to have extended our Tammy Fender family to the teams in Shrewsbury, New Jersey and the Upper West Side store in NYC.  Walking into each store I was transported to a dream-world of all things feminine & beautiful, filled with happiness to see our products gracing the shelves and ready to transform the skin of the bluemercury clientele.  We spent wonderful days with each team – they are all official Tammy Fender gurus and will take the best care of you as you begin your Tammy Fender journey to amazing, glowing skin radiating from the inside out.  We are looking forward to planning in-store events and appearances at these locations so stay tuned for updates….thank you, bluemercury!  We love being a part of your family!

Beauty, Wellness, and Wisdom: Tammy Fender

Tammy Fender’s namesake skincare line employs the inherent restorative qualities of pure, plant-based elements to create inner and outer radiance. By using the living parts of a plant – the “life force” if you will – Tammy’s products nourish the skin on a cellular level, literally feeding it with food-grade ingredients. She explains, “You’re utilizing that life force onto another life force – and creating homeostasis and harmony within the body.” And considering the skin is so transdermal (“You can rub garlic on your feet and taste it in your mouth almost immediately,” she comments) creating balance – or imbalance – can be achieved with the application of topical products.

Yet the physical benefits of her skin and body line are only part of her overall holistic stance on wellness. She explains, “I’m working on not only the physical level, but the psychological, emotional, spiritual level.” She continues, “For example, our antioxidant creme: it’s a multivitamin in a jar, wonderful for all skin types. For this product, we utilize an ingredient that is a sweet orange from Sicily. It has the ability to absorb into the skin at a cellular level, producing a swelling effect on the cells and helping them retain nourishment and moisture. But it goes even deeper than that. The combination and synergy in the product is a natural antidepressant. So it has a very uplifting effect on the psyche and on the person as a whole.”

1. bulgarian rose water cleanser
2. intensive repair balm
3. essential c tonic
4. firming eye gel – elderflower & green myrtle
5. quintessential serum
6. bulgarian lavender body oil
7. antioxidant creme – neroli orange
8. capillary strengthening blend

Examples like this are endless; in reality, all of Tammy’s products are formulated with a larger holistic goal in mind. She tells us, “As you start to delve deeper into our philosophy, and what the products are, even if they are very streamlined and very simple – like lavender essence – they are working on all levels.”  But perhaps what is most refreshing about Tammy Fender is her acknowledgment that everyday health can be achieved through the smallest, simplest of steps. As ABC Home is situated in the center of arguably the most frenetic and high-stress city in the world, we were curious to tap her for easy tips to stay calm, healthy, and happy. Tammy’s beauty, wellness, and wisdom advice, below.

Remember to breathe. “The simplest one, which is a power tool we carry with us all time, is our breath. When you breathe in, just visualize the brilliant white light going in through every inhale – cleansing, healing, bathing every cell, every atom and everything about you. As you breathe out just start to visualize what no longer serves you, what you no longer want or need in your life… leaving your body through the exhale.”

Try a smile. “No matter how you’re feeling in a day, try putting a smile on your face. Your body releases endorphins through a smile. It will completely change whatever it is you may be feeling stressed about it. It’s so simple. And usually, someone will smile back.”

Find a word. “Maybe something that you’d call a mantra, and you can use that word whenever you need it. Maybe ‘relax,’ or ‘I am at peace,’ or ‘I am.’ When you say that word, you automatically and simultaneously relax at that fraction of that second. There may be times when you have to say it a thousand times a day, but you will start to find that you’ll get into this groove of relaxing.”

Simplify. “If you can start to really simplify: simplify your thoughts, then simplify your life. For example, whenever you have the opportunity, have an organic piece of fruit or vegetable. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate thing. The same thing holds true in skincare. You don’t have to worry about, ‘If I don’t use 5 or 6 products it won’t work.’ You can get by with one thing, with one product, and then slowly start to add new things into that routine. Soon enough, people find it’s so simple – they’ve lost the complexity of being so mainstream!”

We’re already devotees – of both her product line and philosophy. Shop her products, above. Thank you Tammy, for catching up with us!

February 14, 2011 – LOVE

Monday, February 14th, 2011

heartscroppedTo intentionally spend time focusing your energy on love and its power is a beautiful and profound experience.  I often remind myself in times of distress or difficulty that “everything is love.”  Those simple words offer comfort and the knowledge that peace may be found in simply giving yourself up to love.  A consistent and ancient belief held by man down through the ages is that the body is a physical manifestation of energies located in seven centers of the human body.  These centers are called chakras, meaning “wheels of energy,” that are always open and in complete harmony.  In honor of the perfection of love, my words today are in celebration & exploration of the heart chakra – the energies that govern the heart & feelings of love – the core of our physical & spiritual center.  Through this chakra, we open to and connect with harmony & peace – wholeness, boundless love and a wellspring of compassion, creating balance between body, mind and spirit.  The energies from the heart chakra harmonize the immune and endocrine systems; the radiation produced by love flow can heal the entire body.  A deep and profound joy of life is found in the recognition that everything in our lives flows from the heart.  Once we have manifested this in our own lives, we begin to receive from others what we have already seen and created in ourselves – love.

Be love in each moment, for it is your truest self.  Happy Valentine’s Day:)
